The Real Truth About The Mastery Journal
Being productive and able to focus on what really matters in growing our businesses or reaching our goals can be really hard. There’s the constant interruptions from children, phones, co-workers, you name it. We’re naturally trained to jump from here to there to everywhere without making any real progress.
That negative cycle needs to end. If you want to get anywhere in your life, be intentional about your money, goals, or business, then you need to make a change. Sure, it takes tons of effort and won’t happen overnight, but when you’re committed to something, it shows by how you structure your life around that commitment.
That’s why I wanted to share a magnificent solution with you for this problem. As part of my main goal this year to quit my job, I’ve picked up on tools, resources, and things from the very best in order to help me. This tool I’m going to share today I’ve only been using for 4 days, and I’ve already seen progress! It’s called The Mastery Journal.
The Mastery Journal
If you’re not a fan of John Lee Dumas and Entrepreneur On Fire, you should be. He’s one of the most inspirational entrepreneurs that I follow. He is the master of productivity, discipline and focus. And he recently shared how he does it.
John created The Mastery Journal that you can follow through with for 100 days in order to master these qualities yourself. I had been having a hard time with these things myself for the past few years, and I was tired of losing time with the things I wanted to achieve.
So I picked up my own copy and started digging in right away. In fact, I took a picture as soon as it arrived and tagged John on Facebook. And wouldn’t you know it? He liked my post.
So what is The Mastery Journal? It’s a daily journal that will guide you through the actions to take in order to master these qualities:
- productivity
- discipline
- focus
It’s designed to help you evaluated how you’re doing constantly, on a daily and 10-day basis. With it you can:
- set bite-sized goals
- plan your morning routine habits
- express gratitude
- chart your progress
and much more! You don’t have to worry about being a big journal writer. It’s not about that. It’s about creating the habits and systems to help you reach whatever you want to achieve.
Here’s How It Works
So let’s break it down even further. What does The Mastery Journal have you do each day? Here’s a walkthrough of what you can expect.
Each Night
- Plan your morning routine habits you want to complete the next day.
- Write down the specific time you want to do your routine.
- Spell out the specific goal you want to accomplish tomorrow.
Each Morning
- Get up and complete your morning routine you chose for the day, checking it off as you go.
- Record the actual times you started and ended your routine.
- Write down something that you’re grateful for to start the day off right.
Daily Sessions
Then you have daily focus sessions specifically for getting stuff done that you record. There is space for four focus sessions, but sometimes I only use three and just adjust things at the end of the day. Here’s what they look like:
- Write down how long you want to work on your task, then how long you’re going to take a break afterward.
- Say exactly what you’re going to work on.
- Then start a timer for the minutes you allotted for the task and then work!
- Once you’re time is up, write down what you accomplished.
- Score yourself (1-10) on how well you were productive and disciplined while working.
That’s repeated up to four times in a single day. Then you tally up your score totals from each of your focus sessions in order to get a general picture of how you did with your productivity, and discipline.
Then I also really like the following questions that you answer every single day:
- What is one way that I can be more productive?
- What is one way that I can be more disciplined?
- What am I most proud of today?
From what you’ve written down, you have a guide on how you can make the next day even better! It’s also about celebrating your accomplishments. Too often we never look back and recognize how far we’ve come and the progress we’ve made. We constantly feel like there’s no progress being made because in this world of online business, there’s always the next mountain to climb.
So I like how The Mastery Journal helps you see all the great things you have done on a regular basis. You need to pat yourself on the back more!
The you rinse and repeat the next day. Now you don’t have to do this exact outline in the journal every single day of the week. There are weekends, vacations, and sick days, of course. But I feel that keeping them as close together as possible is really important.
Have you ever been able to build a strong habit by just doing it here and there every so often? Me neither.
You cannot build strong habits and routines in your life if you are consistent at least five days per week. Have you ever been able to build a strong habit by just doing it here and there every so often? Me neither.
10 Day Recap
So after you’ve working through this routine for 10 days, you can tally up your daily scores you gave yourself to see your progress actually charted out. Here’s what you do:
- Write down your biggest win over the last 10 days.
- Share your biggest struggle over the last 10 days.
- Figure out possible solutions to those struggles.
- Combine and chart out your productivity and discipline scores you gave yourself over the past 10 days.
- Record how you’re going to be more productive over the next 10 days.
- Write down how you’re going to more disciplined over the next 10 days.
- Then decide and share with yourself if you feel like you have actually made progress the last 10 days.
Then you repeat this recap 10 more times as you progress through 100 days of The Mastery Journal.
Extra Goodies
Of course, there’s some chit-chatty intro and explanation from John in the beginning that help you understand how to use the journal, define the differences between all these terms, and how to make it work great for you.
There’s even an additional calendar in the back that you can use to see your progress along the 100 days all in a single spread. I also like the big notes/ideas/musings section in the back of the journal for extra thoughts and space. Plus a a fancy schmancy elastic to hold the cover shut!
There’s a few built-in ribbon bookmarks that you can use wherever you like. I have mine on:
- my current day I’m on
- the next 10 day recap page
- the 100 day calendar in the back
Plus, this awesome journal is hardbound, big enough to feel substantial in your hand, fits easily in your bag, and has silver lined paper. I love the color silver! Honestly, it’s a reason that contributed to me buying the journal.
